BMW excels at answering questions no one asked. First came the X6, a large, squat crossover with coupelike lines that baffled some people. BMW calls it a "sport activity vehicle," a quiet acknowledgement that the X6, unlike the more practical X3 and X5, sacrifices utility for style. The 2017 BMW X4 will carry the same theme in a smaller, more affordable package.

Like its larger design inspiration, the X4 is more about high-riding style than utility. Does a market exist for a fashionable, limited-use crossover? BMW thinks so. The company's chairman says X models account for nearly a third of BMW brand sales. Buyers might like the smaller X4 even better.

The X4 will share a platform with the X3, but will sit 1.5 inches lower and wider. A long hood, short overhangs and a fastback-style roof line give the X4 a dynamic stance, even while borrowing the tall doors and bulbous back end of the X6. Sharp panel creases even crib a bit from the Z4's language.

The base model X4 xDrive28i will use a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 240 horsepower, while the xDrive35i gets a 300-hp turbocharged six-cylinder. Both models get a standard eight-speed automatic transmission with manual shift paddles and all-wheel drive. BMW says the xDrive28i can sprint from zero to 60 mph in 6 seconds. The xDrive35i requires just 5.2 seconds. A sport suspension and performance-oriented stability control promise expected levels of BMW handling ability.

Inside, the X4 will offer nearly 18 cubic feet of storage behind the rear seat or 49.4 cubic feet when folded. The split rear bench seats three passengers and folds in a versatile 40/20/40 configuration. A power tailgate comes standard and can be equipped with a hands-free feature that opens it when you swipe your foot under a sensor. Wrapped up in the optional navigation system and iDrive infotainment controller (the latter now features a touchpad for letter and character input) is a suite of smartphone-connected apps including Pandora, TuneIn and the Amazon cloud player. Optional driver and safety aids will include active cruise control, lane departure warning, a rearview camera with 360-degree view and an automatic parallel parking system.

On one hand, BMW's move to make a smaller X6 seems cynical, an attempt to wring dry a segment that's neither SUV nor four-door "coupe." Perhaps that's why the automaker has dubbed the X6 and X4 concepts as "sports activity vehicles." The 2013 Range Rover Evoque has found success as a compact luxury crossover, so there's no reason to think BMW won't find an eager market for a more windswept, sport-minded X3. Then again, BMW will need to infuse the X4 with mojo that the 3 Series in its various guises (wagon, Gran Turismo) doesn't deliver already, a flavor beyond moderate off-pavement ability.

Look for the 2017 BMW X4 to arrive at dealers this spring starting at $45,625. Check back for a full review of the BMW X4, including specs, driving impressions and buying advice as it becomes available.
